5 Tips for the School Holidays

12 JUN 2023

School holidays are a wonderful time for children to unwind, explore and learn outside the rigour of school. During this time, it's important to strike a balance, where structured activities can comfortably coexist with periods of free play. Michaelina Turrell, Head of Learning at b_together Singapore gives her five top tips around summer planning to nourish young minds, bodies and spirits.

b_together's summer camps are packed with activities that build confidence, mindfulness, and friendships.

1. Create Structure: Although excessive structure can hinder children's creative freedom, a total lack of structure can lead to a sense of instability. Plan for a blend of both, where a schedule can serve as a backbone for the holidays.

2. Leave Room for Free Time: Unstructured time is an opportunity for creativity and self-exploration. It allows children to unwind, pursue their interests, and, quite simply, be children. A good tip is to let kids luxuriate in their freedom, allowing for moments of spontaneity.

3. Make a Mess: Play, in its myriad forms, is a powerful tool for child development. More than just entertainment or amusement, play leads to learning and skill acquisition. When curating activities for children during holidays, let them make a mess, with cooking, painting, and other expressive creative arts.

4. Engage the Senses: Technology is so seamlessly part of our children's lives. However, it is essential to counterbalance this with physical and outdoor activities that stimulate their senses. Incorporating activities that engage sight, touch, sound, smell, and taste ensures a well-rounded experience and promotes their cognitive and sensory development. Yoga is an excellent activity for this, along with things like nature walks, gardening, or cooking classes to further enhance their sensory experiences.

5. Encourage Social Interaction: While children may have their own friends and social circles, school holidays present an opportunity to forge new connections. Engaging in group activities and shared experiences not only facilitates the development of new friendships but also refines their social skills — possibly the biggest takeaway for children who join a summer camp.
